Why do people consider the Beatles to be so great?!

Because 98% of any listening audience have no clue as to bad or good - it's only their uninformed opinion and has nothing to do with any formal knowledge of music. That's the biggest reason that the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Hendrix, etc. are often considered God-like.
And people, both in and outside of any listening audience, are generally sheep - particulalry when their young. They bend to peer pressure, "suck up" marketing, and in total buy anything (music or otherwise) that's pronounced as being "in" "cool" and so on.
Frankly, and in my opinion, the Beatles were a very ordinary bunch of very ordinary musicianswho collectivley got the "break of a lifetime."
Think about their first 2 or 3 albums....."ho hum" Chuck Berry, and Rock-a-billy stuff that had already become cliche' among the majority of listeners. Later, their material turned chaotic and non-sensible as a result of their experimentation with drugs and their frequent visits to India in search of "the meaning of life."
George Martin, their producer + their management company and promoters deserve virtually all of the credit for turning the Beatles into what they've become.
Hell.........Elvis and Colonel Parker pulled the same stunt a decade earlier.
I will admit one thing. Lennon and McCartney did write a few decent ballads (if, in fact, they actually wrote them without assistance.)
In summary..........99% of the "crap" that came out in the mid-late 60's was exactly that - "crap."

Cheri, I won't/can't disagree with their record sales or popularity. They are quite probably the most popular musical group in history. However, popularity is more likely to be "spawned" from my previously stated marketing blurb, rather than talent.
Consider Britney Spears before she went entirely berserk. She "owned" the airwaves, made millions from endorsements, influenced an entire generation of young music listeners, and so on. But talent.....c'mon really......at best she was a decent dancer - the girl couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. And.that's my point here i.e.
Popularity alone does NOT equal ability/talent.
Average band?? At the height of their popularity, they had 6 of the top 10 songs on radio!! They have been an influence and inspiration to all bands that came after them. They are far from average.
The Beatles released more than 40 different singles, albums, and EPs that reached number one. I believe that total to be WAY above average.
They had great song writing abilities.

You certainly do not know enough about the Beatles to think that your average opinion would count in this matter.
They are what they are and no one can truly take it away from them...
Average is the last remark anyone would make about them if they really did any research on the band.
