The band, Lynyrd Skynyrd originally called "My Backyard," was formed in Jacksonville, Florida in the summer of 1964 by teenage friends Van Zant, Collins, Gary Rossington (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass) and Burns. Their early influences included British Invasion bands such as Free, The Yardbirds, the Rolling Stones, and The Beatles, as well as Southern blues and country & western music.[
