This is probably a silly question but what is the difference between Rap & R&B?!

Question: it's not a silly question.
You need to go back in music history to understand I guess because the media and all that for some stupid reason decided to put these two together as if they are the same - They're not and never was.

New Jack Swing that came out in the late '80s and stayed till the early to mid '90s IMO caused this confusion. Thanks to Teddy Riley.

See, R&B means (was supposed to mean) Rhythm & Blues and was sometimes called soul sung generally by blacks (with the exception of Kiki Dee, Teena Marie and Jon B).

The best way i can describe it is songs with soul and actual instruments.

But examples of real R&B singers are Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye, Brian McKnight, Babyface, Vanessa Williams.

Beyonce, Usher and any of those are not R&B or rap or hip hop.

Unlike Rap. R&B derived from rythm and blues. In fact, I believe it's been around longer than rap.

r&b is like more love singing.. rap is like gangsta

R&b is singing..rap is um...rapping....

my understanding is that R&B (rhythm and blues) has more of a melody and singing. rap is concentrated on the bass beat and rhyming in a somewhat speaking voice.
examples:
rap - snoop dog
r&b - Mary J. Blige
r&b is rhythm and blues.

I agree with the first guy.

R&B is older than rap... it's very soulful.

Rap is Rap. R&B is Rhythm and Beat.

Rap is the art of rhyming..and is more poetic..spoken word with a beat you can say..R & B is rhythm and blues..Rap & R & B are delivered differently in terms of the usage of the voice..rapping you express your words through rhyming..R & B is more through singing.
