Who is "The joker" in American Pie(the song)?!

Question: Bob Dylan was "The Joker"

'The Joker sang for the king and queen, in a coat he borrowed from James Dean in a voice that came from you and me'

The reference to his voice 'coming from you and me' is to Dylan's sining voice, which was not great and often was referred to as being pretty average, thus the reference to 'coming from you and me' as in a common man's voice, nothing special about it.

Edit: It wasn't "the joker" it was "the jester" and it was Dylan!
Check this out...it explains the whole song.

Mic Jagger from the Rollin Stones

Search and ye shall find...

There is no joker in the song, it is a jester.

I believe Don McLean, the songwriter, was referring to himself.

From an interview in 2000, Don says this about the song:

"The song starts off with my memories of the death of Buddy Holly. But it moves on to describe America as I was seeing it and how I was fantasizing it might become, so it's part reality and part fantasy but I'm always in the song as a witness or as even the subject sometimes in some of the verses."

i don't remember a joker...a jester, which is Bob Dylan though.
The reference to Mick Jagger is, So come on Jack be nimble Jack be quick , Jack Flash sat on a candle stick.

Okay...American Pie is one of the best songs ever.

You know that the song was written as a memoriam of Buddy Holly's death and Mr. McLean said that it was his rememberances of America at that time.

The Jester...is Bob Dylan. Here is a really good intrepretation of the lyrics of that song. One of the best that I have read. You have to read a couple of paragraphs to understand why it is Dylan. Mainly because Dylan posed for a record cover or some such thing in a coat that looked like one James Dean had worn (a red windbreaker) in one of his movies.

Really read the commentary provided, it is really intresting.

This is great. Many answers and all of them get thumbs down. Just goes to show, the only one who knows is Mr. McClean and he ain't sayin.
