Whats you definition of Hip Hop?!

Question: Contrary to popular belief, hip-hop is not a lifestyle. Hip-hop is an attitude. You can't say that it's a lifestyle, because it touches too broad a range of living situations. You could be broke, living in a cardboard box, and still be hip-hop. Or you could be Russell Simmons, living like an undeserving king, and still be hip-hop. It's all about how you feel inside. That's what hip-hop is.

It the culture

hip-hop is a culture....a freedom of action and expression.

Hip Hop is more than music, Hip Hop has crossed cultural boundaries that other music genres never crossed. Hip Hop is not only the music I listen to...but they way I walk, talk, dress and act. Hip Hop is a state of mind, an entire generation...30yrs strong.

I agree with Bleu's theory that Hip hop is an attitude more than anything else. Anyone can be hip hop, regardless of race, sex, sexual orientation, background, or where you're from. Hip hop runs in the veins not in the appearance. It's like being religious, you may not bear a cross and carry it on your back to show your spirituality but it doesn't mean you're not a religious person.

Maybe I haven't really been taught what it means. But to me hip hop has always been the style of music that R Kelly and many singers have done in the 90's. I mean it may not be love songs, but its that soft, methodic rythm telling a story about lovers or how intense the person's feelings are about something or for someone. Like with Gerald Leverts songs and even Usher songs. I'm sure some might say that is rythm and blues. But to me rythm and blues is more like Jazz type stuff in a way. More moody, blue, deep. But I guess some of the other responders are right, hip hop is an expression of feeling outloud, but not always in such a negative way, as it is done in rap. With rap, some artists may sing about their lives true enough but at the end of the day, they are so harsh about it, that most are just like ignore the lyrics and let me shake my behind to the beat instead. So I feel with rap the real messages they are trying to convey are kind of lost because they are being very harsh about it and people are tuning them out. I could be wrong, but just my view.

My definition for hip hop is an African American music resembling their feelings to society in a way without getting put in jail
