Why were the Beatles not as good as solo artists as they were together?!

Question: Their solo albums were not as artful and good as Beatles albums, with a few exceptions such as "Band on the Run."

Answers: Their solo albums were not as artful and good as Beatles albums, with a few exceptions such as "Band on the Run."

As you mentioned there are exceptions, but for the most part I agree. I do find a great deal of John Lennon's, Paul McCartney's and George Harrison's solo work to be quite enjoyable however I don't feel that alone they ever reached the same great level of song writing the Beatles had together.

The reason I think is band chemistry. Someone mentioned that 4 heads are better than one, and that's not necessarily true, it is when the 4 are John, Paul, George and Ringo, but any one of them could have been different and the magic would have been altered. For example I'm in a band that I am very very proud of and I think we create some very innovative music thats not just innovative but enjoyable to listen to. But a while back we had a different drummer, and I think you could easily say this drummer was one of the most talented drummers I have ever seen, he didn't actually bring a lot to the table musically, eventhough he was capable of doing rediculous things. The drummer we have now not only better serves the music but bring more creatively to the whole process. we also added a keyboard player who is on the same page as the rest of us and suddenly we went from what I think was a decent band, to a really damn good one. Eventhough if you were to put our old drummer and our new drummer in a competition drum off type thing, our old one would just destroy the new one. The newer one is a very capadble drummer in his own right, but is really just more creative.

So my answer was long but basically it comes down to what other musicians call chemistry (actually sports teams rely on this too). 4 heads isn't always better than one, because there can easily be too many cooks in the kitchen with 4, but when the 4 are John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr well really only good stuff happens.
Also George Martin and the team of studio engineers didn't hurt either.

well that is a matter of opinion...some people might believe the beatles where better on there own...john lennon..imagine..that was a really big hit and it was just himself.

1. 4 heads are better than 1
2. George Martin
3. Burnout.

lyrically and song writing was done by the 2. john and paul.
the beatles werea great band together..

solo wise its a matter of opinion..paul mcartney and wings was a good band, and had great success.

john lennon was great solo as in imagine etc..also with the plastic ono band i myself liked it..

george and ringo had some success but none othem had as much success as the beatles did...

i dont think there will ever be another beatles in my life...the greatest in my opinion..

Well, I mean most of it has to do with McCartney and Lennon. Did you know Lennon could only write the middle of a song. And McCartney could only write the beginning and ending?
The two of them together..they were able to create a great song. Also Lennons and McCartneys voices just went together when they would sing. Harrison and Starr were also a major part of the Beatles. Harrison in my opinion played the guitar great. Starr was a great drummer. Dont kid yourself...most of those songs '67-'69 were written from the amount of LSD.. (drugs) they did.
But, I mean...Imagine by John Lennon is a great song. One of the most popular and he did that alone. And 'All those years ago' by Harrison is also great.
Remember, times were chnaging and so did their music.

Music should be for young playful hearts. In there later years they forgot how to smile and laugh, maybe?

George Martin was more of a part of the Beatles success than many realize.

John Lennon seemed to have a goal and a certain amount of happiness. But many people refused to embrace his relationship with Yoko.

because of their ego's, when they were in the beatles they were kept in check by each other, when they did their own thing they were surrounded by a bunch of yes men

Because usually the part is not greater than the sum of the parts (or however that saying goes)

Other examples:

The Police
Black Sabbath
The Eagles
The Replacements
Husker Du
The Babys

Exceptions:

Buffalo Springfield
Cream
The Yardbirds

I have no clue but my dad might know he listens to them more than I do and knows more about them
