Actually...asking questions in this yahoo classical area isn't a bad idea. There are quite a few knowledgable people that answer and mostly everyone on here enjoys classical. I think it's WONDERFUL that you are interested in classical music. It is, of course, a much different world and listening experience than that of popular genres. Many classical musicians will tell you...it is like the difference between eating a burger and then tasting filet mignon, etc. Exploring classical music is essentially exploring the art of making sound and searching for the roots of the music that you know today. There is also still "classical" music being written in the same traditions as the masters.

Listening and learning about classical music is incredibly rewarding. You will learn not only about specific pieces, composers, and periods of music, but you will also learn about history, culture and other media such as visual art, literature, poetry, theatre, dance, and film. Not to mention....you will find pieces of music that affect you very deeply. There are pieces out there that are so good, you almost can't put it into words...they touch your heart and speak to your soul. I know that sounds cheezy...but it's true.

For music listening...I would try starting with the greats...(Debussy is definitely great...so good job on that choice!)
J.S. Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Frederic Chopin, Sergei Rachmaninoff...Franz Liszt...to name a few...

As for chat rooms, etc...Music Banter is a decent site:http://www.musicbanter.com/index.php
also Piano World is famous for its forums http://www.pianoworld.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ul...
this site has classical chats for specific composers and other stuff http://classicals.com/music/intellectpor...

Also...YouTube is a fantastic place to go and start exploring classical music. Not only do you get to hear musical clips, but you can see some AMAZING live performances from the greats and of course chat about them. Here are some of my favorite youtube clips and pieces....I hope you enjoy...and have fun in your discoveries!,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akepJRIkf... - Chopin, Prelude Op. 28 No. 16 played by Sergio Tiempo (not only is he freakin' sick at the piano...but he's eye candy as well ;P)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBS-W4sUZ... - Rachmaninoff, Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, 1st movement. Played by Valentina Lisitsa, another young pianist who I feel is one of today's best.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xir-5oAWx... - Sarasate, Zigeunerweisen as played by Itzhak Perlman, one of the greatest living violin players.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOMt-MiI0... - Stravinsky, Rite of Spring conducted by Salonen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=US9U4aXCf... - Faure, "Pie Jesu" from his Requiem as sung by Lucia Popp.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyzZL8L7V... - Wieniawsky, Violin Concerto No. 2 , 3rd mvt. played by Heifetz, one of the greatest violinists of all time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu-1W1k1Q... - Prokofiev Etude played by Antonio Pompa-Baldi, silver medalist at the 2001 Van Cliburn Intl. Piano Competition.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJWjYLG3B... - Popper, Dance of the Elves played by Rostropovich, one of the cello greats.

So many more...wish I could show you them all.

Try reading some books about schools or places where music was most cherished. Such as the Juilliard School, or try reading biographies or autobiographies about famous musicians (Jacqueline Du Pre's sister wrote a book about her) there are books about Leopold Auer and Dorothy DeLay, Ivan Galamian and other famous teachers and concert artists.

You can also go to http://www.violinist.com in case if you have any question about string instruments. Otherwise google some chatrooms.
