Smashing Pumpkins- First three albums are wonderful, after that they kinda lost it... and by it.. I mean most of the band. It's just Billy and Jimmy now :(
Nirvana- I was a pretty big fan of them back in the day, they have some pretty good songs. They were a little over rated, but still enjoyable. Plus when I was first learning guitar, Nirvana songs were a staple, simply yet fun to play.
][-][ ][ ][v][- Love 'em. They have some great albums (as long as you don't count Dark Light) Love the new album, Venus Doom, very husky vocals. Only one negative... they are TERRIBLE live... really, bad.
The Used- Not nuts about them, they have a few songs that I like, some of the ones that were featured on some soundtracks I own. Not a bad screaming voice, they wouldn't be my first choice in bands though.
AFI-Hate them soooooooooo much. The last album was atrocious enough to kill out any of the good stuff they did in the past. A great deal of people like them, at least their earlier stuff, so you may as well.

Nirvana is the only good one. Listen to Metal it;s alot better then those guys. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dream Theater, Nightwish are awesome bands.
I know about the first two that you had listed. I do not know the others.
Nirvana & Smashing Pumpkins are great. Still listen to them.
Heard a couple songs by HIM, & they sound OK.
Don't like The Used or AFI much.

Smashing Pumpkins - don't really listen to them
Nirvana - went through a phase in high school where I thought they were amazing, but now that I've been exposed to wider arrays of music, I realized that they're just "okay" but not all that special.
H.I.M. (His Infernal Majesty) - not all that great, although the have some catchy songs, but there are a lot of much better bands that have influenced them, namely the gothic rock bands from the 80's and 90's.
The Used - never listened to them
AFI - listened to them before, but they're not all that great.
Honestly, if you're going to pick one of the bands to listen to out of all of these, then go with Nirvana, because they're quite silly.
Nirvana were very good, as for the rest, not my thing!! To be honest, I think the rest of them suck!!!
As for describing their kind of music (Nirvana not included) I'd have to say it was droning dirge!!!
Well they are all lovely driving music if you do not have a cd player or no other stations come in on radio,but NIRVANA is THE BEST ON YOUR LIST !!! OLD SCHOOL .....HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES..R.I.P. KURT !!!
Smashing Pumpkins - I love their first 3 albums. One of my favorite bands... I was very disappointed with this last album though.
Nirvana - Never was a fan, always thought they were very over-rated. There are far better grunge bands, but Nirvana seemed to steal the fame.
HIM - Good band, their last couple singles were a little weak, but overall they have a very good collection of music.
The Used - meh.. haven't heard much from them and I'm not all that interested to either.
AFI - They're good, I prefer their earlier work over these last couple albums, but they're a very talented band.
I love nirvana! theyre awesome, they're grunge music. dont really like the smashing pumpkins and H.I.M.

Nirvana-Legendary and great.
I like them all except smashing pumpkins. My favorite is the used i am actuaaly listenin to them now
depends on what you like heavy, old school etc. HIM is love metal I like all of them expect for new stuff from the used and AFI but for me its a different sound.
None of these are heavy so most people i know that don't like any sort of music like that normally like a few songs of them

Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins are pretty good. Back when music still was good, they made some good contributions.
1: Amazing. Can do loud and soft really well (XYU versus Take Me Down) and if you can look past the terrible vocals, they are really creative.
2: Very good. A bit overrated, but still a good band.
3: Couldn't say.
4: Blah, just emo crap.
5: Great band. The only decent emo band out there. I really like their music. I suggest you also check out Blaqk Audio, which is a side project of AFI.
Smashing pumpkins---- one of the greatst bands ever...very alternitive slightly indie but none the less awesome sound
Nirvana---im not much of a nirvana fan so imnot sure...
H.I.M--- lovly---LOVE METAL ....can be slightly annoying some times ....great lyrics
The Used--- eehh there pretty good...not the best...although a good song to check out is sound effects and over dramatics or smoother me <3
A.F.I (a fire inside)--- hmm well i have to say that there pretty much awesome...they have many diff sounds just deppending upon which album.... there any where from punk/hardcore to gothic rock and in there latest album [ decemberunderground] some Electronica was infused...but the best album was Sing the Sorrow .... go check it out XD

Smashing Pumpkins - Older stuff is great. 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" is still one of my favorite albums. I'm not too fond of their newer music.
Nirvana - I think they have always been overrated. Never liked Cobain's voice and only like the lyrics to a few songs. "where did you sleep last night" is a great song by them. The best thing to come out of the popularity of Nirvana was the Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters.
H.I.M - Don't know too much about them. From what I have heard, they are just ok. 'Wings of a Butterfly' is tolerable, but not a top tier song in my mind.
The Used - A lot of people compare this band to 'My Chemical Romance', but I think they are much different. MCR is a bunch of posers and I think these guys are legit.
AFI - Love the song 'Silver and Cold'. The lead singer has one of those voices where you either love it or hate it...kindof like Coheed and Cambria.
Smashing pumpkins - An absolutely terrible band. I heard 2 songs and i'd never listen to them again if i was dead.
Nirvana - Very good band, I love Nirvana. It's such a shame that Kurt's gone. It would of been interesting to see how his music would develop through time, if it did.
HIM - Not a fan, heard a few songs and they're good. But i'm not really interested in looking into anymore.
The Used - Terrible, I hate everything about them. I hate the lead singers vocals, and I hate the sound of the music.
AFI - I used to listen to a few AFI songs. But anymore, they're an alright band. They're nothing special and I don't really understand how thhey caught on.

HIM, the lyrics are a lot about love. but i like it and it sounds good for metal love songs
The Used im not a big fan of. they have screaming and its just not that great to me.
AFI is the best band ever (in my opinion) they have a great combination of both screaming and singing. the performances are off the walls and i believe you can find a song for just about any emotion you are feeling.
The smashing pumpkins and nirvana are pretty good the others i don't really listen to.
