My instant response would be "how old are you?" Not in a mean or condescending way, but it has a lot to do with context. When Nevermind dropped it was this whole new thing that was opening up a whole new sound. Right before that, at least in the mainstream, it was all hair bands and boy bands. Everything cool was really under the radar and communication wasn't what it is now to really show those bands off on a large scale. I was in my early teens at the time and I remember hearing Nevermind and Ten (by Pearl Jam) and totally had the wow factor. Instantly everyone was a Nirvana fan. It was something the jocks and the metalheads could have in common, even a lot of the hip hop kids.

Looking back and especially seeing it from a perspective where they have been copied and overplayed and the effect has significantly watered down it may not seem so impressive, but at the time... It was crazy and new. I ended up being more of an Alice in Chains guy overall, but Nirvana was that good and acheived the status long before Cobain killed himself. Maybe there is effect in the fact that he didn't live long enough to get older and perhaps he would have lost touch and thus made some subpar music, but they are that popular, at least in my generation, for a reason.

You may be suprised at how much of todays rock music is a branch off of their tree. Not to say that they were the first doing that, but they broke it open.

As Cinnamon Girl said above too, Teen Spirit is kind of a middle of the pack Nirvana tune overall in my opinion too.

They did change music. The were at the forefront of the grunge scene and spawned a new generation of rebellious teens. They helped created a genre which at the time killed metal.

definitely not

whether they are or not it doesn't matter. Nirvana has been over a long time now.

Nope. One of the greatest bands of all time in my opinion.

They wrote simple melodies. Sometimes, the simple things in life are the best. Kurt voice really communicated angst and pain. David Grohl is a great drummer.

They had a big fan base before Cobain's suicide. Their sound was something new, at the time, and they happened to pen a song (namely, "Smells Like Teen Spirit") that the youth of that time just really took to. Their sudden, initial popularity was just a "right place, right time" thing, just as it was with a lot of the popular bands of the grunge movement.

Now, they've managed to remain popular to so many people partially due to the fact that Cobain died so suddenly (same with the hero worship surrounding Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrisson, and others who died young).

Now, I personally agree that their music was overrated (at least their original things). There really wasn't anything fantastic about the guitar playing, drumming, or bass lines. The singing was something new and different.

However, I think their work on their Unplugged performance was fantastic. They did some amazing covers and arrangements on that performance.

meh

the fact that you said "I think that their only popular becuase Cobain killed himself." just proves what you know, so its really not worth explaining.

I think they area only popular because kurt cobain killed himself
Who wears unbuttoned flannel shirts?

when they came out they were like no other band sound wise, it was raw, harsh and cool and loud. They came at a perfect time in music because bands were getting wimpy and music lost it's edge. They combined punk with a metal sound and it totally worked. They were huge before Kurt died. They took the garage sound and made it popular. Unfortunately Kurt could not handle the immense stardom and he slowly imploded. They have been very overplayed on radio and unfortunately because of Kurts death don't have a huge vault of songs but when you compare their music to the music that was around at the time you will see why they were embraced from the second they were played on radio.

Theyre pretty great and probably the best grunge band ever, but Alice in Chains is still WAY better. Pearl Jam is left in the dust.

No i don't agree.

Most fans are in agreement that Smells Like Teen Spirit isn't even /Nirvana's/ best song...

They have a wonderful catalogue of songs, i think they were brilliant, but obviously it's all subjective.
I don't care about their popularity - I'm not even aware of how popular most of the bands i like are - but i do know that Nirvana was already popular when Kurt killed himself and their music increased in popularity after Cobain's death [may he rest in peace].
That doesn't mean it was any less great when he was alive though.

They were something completely new in their time. That's why they changed music, they created grunge.
So no, I don't think its overrated, and I don't even think Cobain killed himself. :)

OK one that's your opinion and this is mine: Nirvana was the band of the 90's They revolutionized grunge and led the music world to what it is today. Kurt Cobain is and always shall be one of musics greats. Nirvana was HUGE even before Kurt commited suicide. Also yes Smells like teenage spirit is a great song (but there are lots of other good ones) Yet this my opinion and that is yours.

There is some truth to that. However, Nirvana is a very good band, and yes, "Smells like Teen Spirit" is the most overrated song ever.

not really no

yea thats tru. their overrated but they're still good. i'll explain it w/ numbers.
on a scale of 1-10, they're a 6 or 7 but ppl think they're a 9. They're above average, but not as good as ppl claim they are

KURT IS GOD DUMB ***!!!

I love Nirvana so to me their not at all overrated.

And what a terrible thing to say that their only popular because of Kurt Cobain's death. Besides, Cobain's debated suicide came after the bands height in success so where is you logic in your comment.

them, along with other bands (smashing pumpkins, pearl jam, etc) defined a genre and a decade. there music will always be there and it is great as well as visionary. cobains death just put the spotlight on them a little more.

yes nirvana is overrated
