How do I get better at guitar?!

Question: Ok, so I've been playing for a year now. I've got the penatonics scales down pretty good. I've got barre chords down and can play most songs that just contain chords. I find looking up tabs and figuring out intricate solos a waste of time. Power chords are a mystery to me, and other than that, I don't know what I should be working on next.

Learn full songs. If you can't even play power chords, I HIGHLY suggest practicing them. Those are the most important thing in rock music. No matter what, pretty much all rock songs will have power chords in them. In case you don't know what a power chord is, it is just the first two notes of a barre chord. By the first two, I mean the two that are closest to you, otherwise known as the E and A string. Keep practicing, and learn full songs. Maybe if you feel so lost with guitar, then you should go take a lesson. I've been playing for five years, and although I figure out everything on my own, it's still nice to have a lesson so my teacher can tell me what I can do to better improve myself. Good luck, and don't give up.

I have found that finding people that are better than me and playing with them helps me get better. The more I play, the better I get at all the transitions and things like that.

You don't have to waste time figuring out "intricate solos", but you should study them to see how different guitarists solve different problems so you can develop your own style. You shouldn't strive to play those solos verbatim, you should strive to "sound like" various guitarists by playing free form. Then you can see what appeals to you most, both musically and technically.
