How do rap, r&b, and hip-hop relate?!
Question: Which is a subcategory of which? I used to think that hip-hop and r&b were more related than hip-hop to rap but now i'm not sure. How do you decide if a song falls into rap or r&b? If a song is quite monotone and has a repetative beat, i'll go rap but some songs aren't as clear cut.

rap is a sup-category of hip-hop. rap is like the dumb songs that are out there that are about even dumber dances and songs about nothing but getting high, girls, and how much money the artist has (lil wayne, soulja boy). hip-hop actually talks about something (jay-z, kanye west, lupe fiasco, common). you have to listen to the content of the song. not just the beat. r&b is something totally different. R&B is singing (soulful singing) not talking or spitting to a beat (chris brown, joe, fantasia, alicia keys)
