What is the song "Watching Airplanes" by Gary Allan about?!

Question: I was told that it is about his wife committing suicide (which really happened) and I just didn't know if that was true. Did anyone else get those implications when listening to the song?

I have seen some reference to that but I do not believe that is what it is; It was written by Jonathon Singleton.

THe Best I Ever Had was actually done for his wife as he has stated himself but I think since his public acknowledgement of his wife's suicide, that people tend to read things into some of his music. I was reading through something a week or so back and remember someone making note that gary had at some time mentioned that his wife liked to watch the airplanes coming in so that is probably where it is coming from but I can't say for sure. I am just speculating like all the rest without any validation for it other than it was written by Jonathan Singleton

he is trying to guess which plane his wife is on.

This is about a woman that he loves who doesn't love him anymore and is leaving. He wishes he knew how to make her stay but he can't and now he is watching her fly away.

its bout the guys girl leavin and he wants her to stey and wounders what he could of done and why she dont love him any more duh!!!!

Gary has made several songs that definitely refer to his wife's suicide. Virtually any song on the album "Tough All Over" fits that description. A couple songs on his new album like "Like It's A Bad Thing" and "Yesterday's Rain" also reference the tragedy. But I think Watching Airplanes is intended just to be a country song about love gone wrong, and I don't think it has anything to do with the suicide.
