When and why did it go from "The Eagles" to "Eagles"?!

maybe they were the eagles so u would know they were talking about the band and not the football team or actual bird and now they decided they are bigger than football or birds so they dropped the and are just eagles. could be something like when prince became a symbol because he wanted to switch labels but the label he was at owned the rights to his name. so he became a symbol that we called the artist formerly known as prince. maybe they switched labels and the one they were on owned the eagles so they said forget them switched labels as eagles.
Does it really matter? God forbid the band takes "the" out and makes it just a single word.
Lots of bands do that without even knowing. Like The Dear Hunter. People call them Dear Hunter. "The" doesn't make a world of difference.
