Hammer on & pull off?!

Question: What does those things mean? I've been looking up guitar tabs, and have no idea how to do those things. Can you explain?
All help really appreciated, thx.

hammer on is like using your middle finger to hit a note and stay there so it makes a sound. almost exclusively for the electric.
a pull off usually is a note your finger is on, and when you forcefully take your finger off, the open string sounds too. Neither of these are done with a pick or your strum hand, but the fretting hand.

eddie VH is good with the hammer ons. I think "eruption" is mainly just that.

They are both terms for electric guitars. To do either you need a fair bit of sustain/distortion. Hammering consist of holding a note on , say, the 1st string and literally hammering the string on the next fret up (or further) with the side of your pick. Pull off is playing a string by dragging your finger off of it sideways without striking it with a the pick.
