I can't stop tuning my guitar. can i ever get it to sound perfect?!

Question: Use a guitar tuner... it will tell you the actual frequency, so you can get all the strings to match spot on.

If you'd just changed the strings, you generally need to retune a few times before they stay put.

If you haven't changed the strings in awhile, they may be warped, and will be a little off. Change them.

Your guitar's intonation may be slightly off... so when you fret a note it may sound a little sharp or flat in relation to others. This can be fixed by doing several different things... if you don't know what those things are and how to do them without someone telling you or looking it up, then take it into a professional.

If your guitar has very cheap/weak tuners, they may not be holding it in tune. Try tightening them. If they can't be tightened, then try replacing them. But try all of the above options first, as this option will probably be the most difficult and certainly the most expensive.

Also... no guitar sounds "perfect". Every guitar (and ever instrument, for that matter) is a *little* off somewhere on the neck... it's just a matter of how severely off it is. So if you just have such a sensitive ear that even the *slightest* difference drives you crazy, then... good luck (note: even very skilled musicians who play by ear aren't irked by things being a *tiny* bit off... but it's not unheard of for someone to be absolutely compulsive about it... just rare, and usually a symptom of a greater mental illness... soooo...)

Do you have an electric tuner? You can get one that has a microphone and it will tell you how close you are to the right frequency.

You should be able to tune your guitar to sound close enough to perfect that you can play it. Are you turning the right pegs...?

Tune it once and set it down. New strings will never stay in tune for longer then a few minutes at a time. Come back tomorrow and retune it and it might or might not stay in tune when playing. If it doesnt stay in tune repeat the process

I suspect your strings are slipping. Make a right-angle bend at the post and be sure to wrap each string four or more times on the post, overlapping the third turn so the string puts pressure on the lower layers.
While playing new strings, they will lose their tune for a few days as they stretch. If it goes on for a week, try a thicker set (larger gauge).
If the problem persist, take it to a shop to have the bridge and tuning keys checked.

Go to download.com and get "AP Tuner", a GREAT free tuner that works with your computer.
