Jazz had to compete with rock, and to get the young audience, they had to plug in. You can't play to a big audience on acoustic instruments, you have to use electric if you're playing big places. It's a shame, both for jazz musicians and the audience. Personally, I prefer small shows with acoustic instruments. Almost all of the best shows I have been to were small venues. The smaller the better.
It wasn't really the electric instruments that hurt jazz, but the electric instruments are the tools used to compete with rock music.
It is possible to make great jazz with electric. One great example of electric fusion played with good taste is Frank Zappa's song, Little Umbrellas. Not unnecessarily loud, but still electric. That song is just an amazing piece of exploratory music, you could play it with any instruments and it would be great.
