John Lennon: "Sgt. Pepper is Paul after a trip to America. The whole West Coast long-named group thing was coming in, when people were no longer The Beatles or The Crickets - they were suddenly Fred and His Incredible Shrinking Grateful Airplanes. I think he got influenced by that. He was trying to put some distance between The Beatles and the public - so there was this identity of Sgt Pepper."

Each individual Beatle was given a fictitious name, and this is the fictitious name of the characters' band. Wikipedia did not delve into this, so I don't have a reference. However, do check this out:

It's the lead song on the Album and it mocks the Beatles success by telling a story about another ficticious band. The reason it's called that is in the song itself, but all I can remember is the line "Now let me introduce to you Sargeant Peppers Hearts Club Band.

Some think, I have no idea if it's true and I doubt anybody could be certain, but they didn't want to be known as "The Beatles" on their first album they made after they dumped their old label and started their own their own label.
