Jake Thackray.

Actually he came from Leeds, but his accent and singing style was peculiar!

Last year EMI released a 4 CD set of his work. It is brilliant.

If you want more info...email me. I am a big fan...as you can probably tell!

Jake Thackray - died on Christmas Eve 2002.
'Sister Josepine' was a classic - but I really like all his songs. A very, funny, witty man.

The wonderful Jake Thackray. He has been dead some years now.

Jake Thackray use to be on the TV programs 'Braden's Week' and 'That's Life'. His website has lots more info.

I hadn't heard that he had died, but oddly enough, quite by accident, I fell upon a number of short films about him some months ago, on the Freeview History channel I think. He had a very peculiar style both to his lyrics and his music, and even to the way he played guitar also, but I was quite a keen listener to him singing his very amusing songs.

I have an old 33rpm vinyl LP of his somewhere in my collection but I'll make it my business to acquire some of his material on CD sometime, as it would be good to hear some of his stuff again.

La-de-da always seemed such a poignant little song to me, and the words always made me feel that I had shared the experience even though I've never been married, but the Jake Thackeray song that has always stuck in my mind was the one about his clumsy friend Leopold Allsop. I certainly had a friend with very similar attributes.

Sadly I guess, it is quite unlikely that anyone else is likely to perform his repertoire, so apart from a few old'ns like me who might have the odd nostalgia trip with his records etc., he is likely to drift into history along with all the old music-hall artists. Don't think there's much chance of a revival of interest amongst today's audiences. Its to their great loss though!
