Band genre question?!
Question: When a group forms a band and gets a record deal, do they know what genre they will be or will the media put them in a genre? Like does a band choose to be a grunge band or does the media label them as a grunge band?

I think the band chooses what genre they should be labeled as.
Maybe even sometimes the media puts them in the label they think they should be in.
That's kinda weird because I think the band should be able to choose what kind of genre they should be labeled as since they are the creators of their music.
No one's going to get a record deal without a fairly established sound/oeuvre.

Well before labeling was so important bands just played what they played and you called them whatever it sounded like. Now I'm sure a lot more bands come in saying "We're a punk/rock/metal/pop/indie band!" because it garuntees a certain artist, but in the end you get labeled based on your sound. I mean Bob Dylan could have gone into the studio to make his newest album swearing up and down that he was a thrash metal artist and that Modern Times is a thrash metal album but in the end we're still going to call it folk or folk rock.
