How can I defend my bands?!

Question: My family is constantly making fun of the bands I like. For example,I was listening to Led zeppelin the other day and my sister said that Robert plant has a terrible voice. All he does is scream. I just don't know what to say. She listens to freaking Hannah Montana. I try to get them into some good music like Jethro Tull, The Who, Bob Dylan, led Zeppelin, Hendrix, etc. They just keep tearing it down. Why doesn't my family appreciate my music. O yeah, the other day my mom and I were in the car listening to Queen and she asked me why he would waiste his talent to singing this music like bohemian Rhapsody. My draw dropped. What should I say to them?

I think you have great taste in music! Anyway, to answer your question, you want to point specific virtues of your bands to your family (e.g., how many records Led Zep has sold, the high esteem in which other prominent guitarists have held Hendrix, any positive comments that prominent music critics such as Lester Bangs have written about your bands, etc.). Of course, you can also point out that musical tastes are very subjective. Good luck!

I understand your situation my family is like this to and do not appreciate my metal music and constantly persecute me for my love for it infact I'm gonna make a career in it.
Anyways

First realize that you cannot most likely change your parent's and family's opinions. So the best way to go on with liking your music is to simply ignore them and do not give them any reaction. Once they realize all their attempts are unaffective by them seeing you give no reaction then eventually they will give up.

*note: rock and metal music are rebellious forms of music keep that in mind!

I wouldn't say anything, just sit back and observe.

Hopefully one day they'll learn.
Though if they dont, then they're entitled to dislike a band - music tastes differ from person to person after all.

Why do you care what your family thinks you enjoy your music, let them enjoy thier

Who cares what they think. I love Zeppelin. Do some research and print off how many millions of their albums were sold and the number of sold out concerts world wide and have your family read it. If they have an IQ above 4, that should shut them up. Rock On !!!!!

Why defend good music? You don't need to defend something that millions of people appreciate, there are LOTS more people who think the way you do. You need to talk to them, tell them to please keep their comments to themselves.

Ask your sister this, "How many times as Hannah Montana been hailed as the greatest....anything?" Led Zeppelin has.

Anyone who doesn't like Bohemain Rhapsody is retarded. Tell your mom she's retarded. That's all I can say on that one.

I wouldn't worry about it. When I was living at home I remember my mom complaining non-stop about Queen. If she heard them it would ruin her day... especially Bohemian Rhapsody or Another One Bites the Dust. She'd say "Oh no, that mama mia s**t is on again, turn it off!"... haha. I just laughed it off and went about my business.
I was very surprised that my mom hated them so much though, because classic rock is her music of choice.

Who cares, why should you have to defend them, you know why they're good, you know they're talented, and we all know they're legendary so you dont have to,they speak for themselves and it's what matters to you anyways, they're missing out and insulting a band larger than life

Why should you feel that you HAVE to defend your taste in music? Does anyone ask you to defend your like or dislike of certain foods? Movies? Books? It is ALL a matter of personal taste. Remember this: there are 300,000,000 people in the U.S., and there has never been an album that sold 300,000,000 copies; meaning, there's nothing that people are universally going to agree on.

Enjoy your music for YOU and don't try to base your tastes on what anyone else thinks, because, in the end, you're the one who's buying the CD, and you're the one who has to listen to it.

Don't say anything. Let them miss out on the best music.

you don't have to say anything

That's pretty odd. I mean your parents grew up in the Zeppelin era. My parents loved all of that music and still listen to it occasionally. But really, your family shouldn't have to love your music. Your poor sister will eventually grow out of Hannah Montana and she'll be stealing your CDs someday. So don't even try to defend your music, it's about as worthless as My Chemical Romance fans defending that kind of genre.... No matter how much people tell them that they suck, the fans won't listen. I guess you should have that mind-set. No matter how much you love something, other people are going to hate it and put it down. There's just not much you can do but love it even more and feel sorry that they won't open up to it like you have. At least you listen to the real stuff. Cheers to you.
