Do you want a country tingy sound then get the tele
If you want a hard rock chunky sound then get the Les Paul

Truthfully....i prefer a stratocaster....
a les paul is heavy....especially if your doin a gig...your shoulder is gonna fall off after a couple of hours.
strat has a dirtier sound than a telecaster. (my opinion of course).
A the Fender Telecaster and the Gibson Les Paul are quite more versatile then people give them credit for. I've seen both guitars used for Rock, Jazz, Country, Fusion... really everything. However, here are the main differences:
Electronics: The Tele uses single coil pickups, which get more gain (however you can get double coil pickups on them... Bill Frissel a jazz guitarist has a custom tele with double coils... its a beautiful guitar http://www.myjazzhome.com/frisell/teleca...
and the Les Paul uses double coil pickups which get a warmer sounded with less gain. However, both guitars are capable of getting a wide array of tonal qualities depending on how you set up your amp and the tone nobs on your guitar.(If you have a poor amp, both guitars will sound horrible)
Weight: The tele is nice and light. The Gibson is nice and heavy.
I personally play on a solid body, double coil 1953 Epiphone and I also play a fender Strat. I switch the guitar's when I want a particular sound. To say the Fender is bright when the Gibson is warm would be a gross error.
The best advice I can give you is to GO PLAY THE GUITARS! play them for a while at the shop. Play them standing up, play them through your amp, play them through the amp you eventually want to have, adjust their tone settings and for the fender the pick up selector. You'll never know until you play the guitars for yourself, which one you really want!
