How do you feel when people stereotype rap/hip-hop?!

Question: Why is rap one of the most shunned upon genres? In your opinion of course.

Answers: Why is rap one of the most shunned upon genres? In your opinion of course.

People misunderstand a lot of hip hop, because of the bluntness of it. Another thing people dont get is rappers are not hitmen and killers, they are RAPPERS, story tellers. I dont think every rapper out there moves 100 pounds of heroin a week but they will say they do.

Alot of people also claim that hip hop is degrating to women, supports drug use, and promotes violence. Some of it does. but so does some country music, rock and roll and even oldies. people just dont like what hey dont understand.

I also think that the stuff they play on the radio is alot of noise if people listened to some of the true lyrisists of the rap game i think it would change there tune. If talib Kwali was played instead of soulja boy i feel a lot more people would be hip hop fans.

Last but not least i think race plays a part i it. look at the "haters" usually older people or the hard rockers just plain hatin. probably because of the color of the rappers skin.

i love rap and hip hop
but ppl dislike it cuz they say it causes violence and such
like gun killin or robberies

well maybe its the lyrics sometimes and the way ppl dance to it

shuned? its on disney and cereal commercials for crying out loud.

my son got into rap and I tried really hard to get into it - but it doesn't work for most people. My opinion is it's lack of originality and continued degradation of women in it's lyrics will always hold it back.

Sorry

People try to say it's discriminatory towards women, blah blah blah, no it's not. I actually think it upgrades woman as a matter of fact. Stupid people be saying this because they don't understand the music, listin to country, are old and conservative, or they are just racist and discriminatory themselves! Cowards lol I love rap/hip hop Makes me feel good and makes me wanna dance dance dance. Up tight mf's shun it :-)

Well, so is country. Lots of people say they like all types of music except one of those. Both genres represent the group an already stereotyped group of people. One side represents black people and one side represents white people. Lots of people don't like Reggaeton either, but everyone prefers to focus on the black vs. white issue more.

People are afraid of change, your parents probably don't like hip-hop the same way that their parents hated their music. Every generation believes that they are the only people to truly understand good music, and that all new stuff is terrible"not REAL music." Music is an individual opinion And all music is an artform.

i think some thinks speaked about in rap is not necessary.
and some is over degrading. but overall its a genre
and a way of life.
so what can anyones words do about it.
i do agree it needs to be a little cleaned up tho..
especcially the degrading against women.
and some women just take it.
who wants their 5 year old.. going around saying.
"slapping a ho" or "booty keep bumpin, titys just bouncin up and down" what!!
no parent should want that.
cuz i know my child would be in trouble!!

but i do like rap alot. just not all the degrading.

Mostly because I don't really think it's intended to be 'music,' as much as it's intended to be 'anti-music.' No, I don't mean that as an insult. Most of the rap and hip-hop music and artists take some sort of irreverant pride in 'going against the mainstream,' promoting socially-scorned ideals, and glorifying crime, disrespect, and indignity. Once the concept caught on and started selling, others saw it as a means by which to make money instead of being a rebellion, and it became commercialized, which essentially made it "endorsed bad behavior." When you add in the frequent elements of sexism and racism that some artists seem to feel they must include, then the entire genre becomes condemnable by association.

To me rap used to be great but now things have gon down.
I dont want to hear about pimpin hoes, fuckin hoes, trickin hoes, etc etc.
When it ain about hoes its about money, cars, and clothes.
Music is a way to express yourslf but afterwhile you should talk of something differen
Rap is going downhill and it annoys me that people cant see that.
Certain rappers stll have stuff worth listenin to but the majority has jus lost the whole feel of rap and now its jus trash.

rock n roll was also hated...
The emotion of fear is directly linked to hate. This leads me to believe that some people fear change and therefore hate any thing they do not understand.
Don’t fret hun, hip-hop, indie-rap and every other TRUE style of music will not pass as a trend. The artists that pour their hearts into verses and rhymes, will continue to do so. As for the pop-rap (crap) that will likely pass, but true hip is here to stay.

Oh – I just hear of hip-hop group out of Pakistan. The group consists of two FEMALES that rap about bringing change to Pakistan. They are under constant scrutiny, and possible even death, but they feel that the message they bring is worth it.

Mainstream rap, is usually deserving of the stereotypes...they do degrade women, talk about killing eachother, etc....all the time.

It's mostly just because of the commercialization... mainstream rap is less of an art form. Most of them are only expressing how they have conformed to the style of mainstream artists before them...usually, not a personal expression of thoughts (beyond running trains on hoes, and killing/pimping the ones that they don't run trains on). Not all "mainstream" artists..but most.

Underground rap, on the other hand has some true personal expression, and is definitely an art form. You can find something you can relate to in any genre, if you try to find it. All musical styles are styles of art...everyone is good in some art-form, but nobody is good in all of them.

you mean hip-hop doesn't stereotype itself..

huh?

Being completely honest it pisses me off when people stereo type music period. When someone hears a song that they don't like from a different genre they immediately down the entire genre. All rap is not bad I know rappers who wont even say a damn curse word .In anything in life you will get what you look for if you just want to here any kind of rap listen to the radio if you want rap with a meaning and subject then get off your lazy *** and find a store with cds from artist who actually have lived the struggle not faking the struggle hell some are still in the struggle. And I am not going to say why the radio wont play real rap because i dont have the time or privacy to tell you how much the gov. controls the music industry.

I think sometimes ppl sterotype it bc they're afraid of the unknown. People dont like things that they dont know about or that they are in denial about.

If you listen to rap with ur ears, esp East Coast rap/ hip hop you will see its NOT all violence and women bashing! Some artists really do have something to say and if you'd listen you could probably even relate to some of it. Gangsta rap is NOT what all rap is about.

It does get stereotyped bc of a few who choose to use it negatively.

But I love it and will always listen!

Country music does the SAME EXACT thing as rap.... it just has a different type of beat to it and it could put you to sleep!!! JMO! But it doesnt have near the critisism!

You know at times it would bug me...but you know what. The ones who do stereotype are the ones who truly don't follow the essense of hip-hop. I don't let it upset me no more, but at least I know that I have passion for it. See what people don't know is that Hip-Hop is more than music also. Hip-Hop has crossed cultural boundaries that other music genres never crossed. Hip-Hop is not only the music we listen to, but the way we walk, talk, dress and act. HIp-Hop is a state of mind, an entire generation...30yrs strong...we are the Hip-Hop generation.

Makes me what to go home and put on my Asheru Cd and school these fools..

I think it's because when one of the highest selling records has violence in it the media thinks that's all rap is about so they have something negative to say,But when an artist like Kanye West sales the media overlooks it causing the rest of the world to only see the violent view of hip hop.

I used to get heated, now I try to "educate" them and let them know that all rap/hip hop is not the same. I think it's "shunned" the most because of what people are exposed to. Most people only see/hear the "money, rims, hoes and bust guns" type of songs, and the media is so biased when it comes to rap/hip hop, so I guess they feel that's what it's all about.

I say that if people think hip hop is stupid than the music isn't made for them, so I'm okay with them not understanding it

Yeah ,not to piss anyone off but one reason I think it's shunned because it was started by black people. And another reason is well obviously because people try to copy the things the rappers talk about in their songs. Some old people can't understand what they are saying because it's "too fast". Most of the rappers like to talk about being gangsters and doing the things that gangsters do.
Don't get me wrong I love hiphop and rap
( just not mainstream)
It's just really degrading towards rap and hip hop

well i love rap/hip hop but today's rapper artiest seems to work about their rhyme and competition instead of rapping about where they come from and how listen to their music. i don't want to say that some of the word they say is harsh but they need to adjust their bad language a little bit but here is something for people who don't like rap/ hip hop. if you don't like it just walk away, turn it off or change the channel, i mean no body force you to listen to it. just because you hate that doesn't mean i have to hate it too. i know where they come from. they just want to put food on the table for their family like everyone else and beside we all don't have to like the same thing if we don't than we wouldn't be in Iraq fight other people. if you don't like rap/hip hop. just don't listen to it like i said no body force you to listen to it. you have control of your own mind, body and soul. do what you feel is good for you and leave other people alone.

Honestly I dont understand some of the lyrics and sometimes it can be really loud.

Anything that you describe as stereotype can be easily proven as fact by looking at the products of many rap/hip-hop "artists".

i don't feel..
they stereotype themselves, and then get the white kids thinking its actualy music.
which it's not.

do i even care?

Hip hop is dead,true.

Rap is basically crap,a bunch of talentless wankers appearing on other fellow rappers' songs and rapping for sh**.
