Is it my imagination, or are many rock musicians here athiests?!

Question: I thought nothing of it at first, but after having been here seven months, I notice that rock musicians are often athiests or pagans. Is this so?

Well it seems that most kinda missed your question. Well I fall into the category of Rock musician and atheist. So I might be able to help you on this one. First I think the lifestyle/image of Rock conflicts with Christian ideals And it has always had a rebellious nature to it. Being against government or religion, its really kind of the nature of the beast. And with that being said there is also the fact that musicians tend to be creative and think outside the box. Which inevitably can lead to the questioning of the things that have been taught to you. And add that to the rebel mentality its a perfect match. But for most so called atheists there is always the option of changing you mind at a later date. And in my experience, is usually the case when they get a bit older and start to look at mortality and how it relates to them. For example I knew a guy that was in the category of which we speak and when a family member passed away he soon started to believe in God. And after speaking with him about it I found out that he wanted to believe said family member went to heaven. So in alot of cases its simply convenient and cool to be an atheist. The Rock image is kind of like a religion. And people just want to fit into its mold. And in regards to one posters reference to Slayer. He is correct. But other members of the band are atheists. Like the chief lyric writer Kerry King.
Hope that is of some help.

Im one and Im a Buddhist and so is my brother a guitarist

Not true. Tom Araya is the lead singer for Slayer, and if you have ever heard them, they aren't gonna win any awards at the Christian music festival, and he is a practicing Catholic.

Atheism & a satanic image/music - SELLS !

In my experience on Y!A, the Religion and Spirituality strand is the most volatile, insufferable, self-patronizing page on this whole site (and I've been on most of them). A true market for weirdos and people who hate themselves and others.

I come here to get away from all of that.

Please don't worry about that. All that matters here is how much you ROCK!! Let's keep it there.

<edit> Ok Sookie, perhaps I was a little heavy-handed. I honestly wasn't trying to offend anyone. People are entitled to their own, but I just didn't see the question as being relevant to this forum as much as a renegade R&Ser out to create a ruccus...

In any case...please accept this olive branch :)

I actually listen to A LOT of Christian Hardcore/Metalcore.

not entirely.
i think that rock musicians are just a little bit more open about different beliefs and ideas than a lot of people. it's like madonna and her kabahla crew. they are open to it and eventually take it as their own.

i'm atheist...but not a rock musician...just a rock/punk fan. :]

some just dont feel that they need to talk about their religion in their music or interviews. you would be amazing who is religious in their day to day lives.

I honestly don't understand why an artist's religious beliefs matter. And it's information I really don't seek out, so your guess is as good as mine.

GrinGASTIC!! - as a former R&S regular and a frequent visitor over there, I will try not to take that personally. While that section does have its share of fanatics, there are also some very cool people.

Edit: Grin - I'm over it. :) I will agree that there are some freaks over there. And I agree that someone's belief system really doesn't have any relevance here...at least not to me. :)

No. try,
Why Friday, Switchfoot ect.
they are all christians.
(there was the Christian 'Revolution' Consert near me and loads of rock bands were there, it was quite freaky really since i am pagan)

meny are 'non believers' the in between atheist and believing.
but i think its a mixture of all really.

I'm Methodist and I play guitar, and not Christian music either. So no.

...oh...*******.... i hope not...but the atheists who rock, are many.....
oh....but i hope they will be neutre by Christian rockers like McR

I honestly don't see why it matters...as long as the music is good who cares what they worship.

its not just rockstars, its the whole world. Most people dont believe in religion because they feel that sense they lied about a majority of stuff that they shouldnt even listen to any of it. And you get the people killing in the name of god. I am an atheist and i dont want to deal with religion because its too close to cults. People follow and believe blindly
