In my early teen years (I'm 19 now), I was introduced to some legendary artists and albums by my parents, mostly in pop & 70s R&B (i.e. early Bee Gees, Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", Earth Wind & Fire...) and I found I preferred music and the music styles that weren't "modern". You have to remember that this was during the plateau of Pop Tarts & Overrated Rap dominating the radio. That led me to begin exploring music on my own.
I just started experimenting with everything from pre-war blues to the Beatles (who my parents were never fans of) to Glam Rock to Heavy Metal to Psychadelia...you name it, I dabbled in it, and I've found that there's not much I don't like. My parents aren't quite as open minded as I am when it comes to music...while they're glad to hear I have an appreciation for the classics, they don't understand why there's some groups or albums that I absolutely adore.
So, yes, I do like the same kind of music my parents do, but my music tastes extend beyond their preferences. I think all kids, at some point in their life, check out the greats who came before their time and changed the music scene forever.

i'd rather worry about my kid reading books.

when I was young I liked the music my parents liked and that was it. But as I got older I developed my on taste in music and like a wide variety. I do still listen the the music my parents introduced me to though.

I have a 13 yr old and he loves all types of genres as do I so we have the same music on our iPods

i listen to the same music as my parents, if that helps.
ive pogarted most of my rock novelty items (CDs, tshirts, pins, etc) from my mom.
