Are there any bands you would like to see try the jam band route, if only briefl!

Question: Most people, whether they like jam bands or not (and I do like them) will admit that it takes a certain level of musicianship and cohesiveness to pull it off successfully. The majority of bands, seemingly, prefer to stick to a rigid setlist, rarely changing a note from night to night. Some of these bands, however, sport some INCREDIBLE players.

Given the chance, are there any bands you would like to see just let it loose, and let the music take control of their live show, rather than them control the music?

If anyone could pull it off, I'd say 311 might be the one.

Apparently, Bruce Springsteen is trying to do just that. One of my friends had front row seats in Chicago and Bruce impromptly played several songs. He would certainly qualify as a Jam Band candidate

This is a pretty good question, but for the life of me, I'm kind of stumped. I tend to think most bands forced to improvise would grow tedious beyond the 4-5 minute range...
Maybe Silversun Pickups?

For one night, given the amount of the talent that is in the band, I'd like to see Aerosmith go this route. Tyler is wonderful on the harmonica, improvising lyrics, and scat singing. Perry and Whitford can play anything, and the rhythm section of Kramer and Hamilton ranks right up there with the all time great drummer / bass combos.

NP: "To Love Somebody" - Silver Ginger 5

First off: great question!

Although their new single is underwhelming for me, I think that Incubus has very talented musicians and would probably jam out very nicely.

During live performances, sometimes bands not known for doing this will go to town. I've seen this from Steve Miller Band (Fly Like an Eagle), Coldplay (Fix You) and surprisingly, the Beastie Boys (they played this like, 8 minute version of "Flute-Loop" with free-stlyle raps! It was awesome...)

Anybody can and should. It shows a degree of ability and unpredictablity that really livens up a show!

When I saw The Flaming Lips back in '95, they finished the show with a 20 minute jam utilizing the strobes and the bubble machine. Being in a very small club I found it very cool and would not mind seeing them approach that level on a short term basis.
