I remember he was called Uncle Dave Macon and was on the Grand Ole Opry.
One of the first stars of the Opry. Uncle Dave Macon and His Fruit Jar Drinkers. John McKuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has one of his banjos, which he played and talked about on the Will The Circle Be Unbroken album.
