2 Burn (Burn) (Mark III)
3 Perfect Strangers (Perfect Strangers) (Mark II)
4 Holy Man (Stormbringer) (Mark III)
5 Drifter (Come Taste The Band) (Mark IV)

6 When A Blind Man Cries (Machine Head Outtake) (Mark II)
7 Shield (The Book Of Taliesyn) (Mark I)
8 Soldier Of Fortune (Stormbringer) (Mark III)

10 Highway Star (Machine Head) (Mark II)

I am also a Huge fan of the Deep Purple splinter groups
Rainbow, Whitesnake, Dio, Alcatrazz, and Blue Murder
In fact The whole Deep Purple/Black Sabbath "Family Tree" contributes about 50% of the bands in My Top 25

*Edit*
Sorry I was so excited about a Purple question I didn't even notice the second part of the question.
I love Richie Blackmore's fiery, neoclassical guitar work.
Ian Gillian's truly awe-inspiring vocal abilities. The amazing organ and keyboards of Jon Lord. The way the powerful voice of Glenn Hughes combined with the rough soul of David Coverdale's vocals. The powerhouse drumming of Ian Paice. Basically everything about Purple in general.

Don't fear the Reaper. That's the only one I know, but I do like it.

Sorry I was thinking of Blue Oyster Cult. Wrong color. Can I receive "Best Answer" for a valiant effort anyway?

Child In Time
Soldier of Fortune
Perfect Strangers
Woman From Tokyo
Holy Man

Sorry if they're a bit obvious

It's kind of hard to explain wny you love a band, isn't it? Deep Purple for me has a perfect combination of immense skill and talent and emotions.

I think I love them because they are melodic, but good to honest rockers. Of course Ian Gillan being as handsome as he is doesn't hurt!

1) April
2) Rat Bat Blue
3) The Mule
4) Soldier Of Fortune
5) Flight of the Rat

Geez...I wish I could name more that 5!

My Mother is a classically trained concert pianist, and as children my siblings and I were forced into piano. Mom taught out of the home, so there was no real way of escaping, or skipping class! Eventually we bought a Hammond B3 organ, and my Mom began teaching organ as well. I guess I was 15 or 16 when Shades of Deep Purple was released. I was a huge fan of Iron Butterfly, along with other keyboard driven bands like Vanilla Fudge, The Nice, and The Doors at the time. This new organ was like a blessing in our home (for me), and a welcome relief from the 'Steinway'.
I immediately began honing my rock and jazz chops to the likes of Earl Grant, Dave Brubeck, Mark Stein and John Lord.
I think I had a fondness for Deep Purple right from the beginning because of John Lords classical training, and his fusion of classic scales, cadences and arpeggios, along with jazz chord progressions, then mixing it all up into this new sound was too good to be true, especially for young teenager looking for a way to rebel!
Also, I now had the same organ as John did, and was fairly versed by that time as far as training was concerned. I began learning all the popular tunes of the day, and for a couple years, while most of my friends were looking for guitar driven rock, I was always seeking out the next cool keyboard band.
My Mom hated that stuff in the beginning, but over time grew to appreciate the fact that some of these guys actually knew how to play, and weren't just a bunch of noisy doped up hippies!
John Lord is a true rock and roll genius and pioneer, just listening to 'Concerto for Group and Orchestra' is proof of that. Those compositions are brilliant!

So that's what really got me into Deep Purple. The minute I heard their version of 'Hey Joe', I was hooked!
Of course I was also infatuated by the other players in the band, especially Ritchie Blackmore, who has always been one of my favorite guitarist as well. The way the whole unit seemed to play off each other, especially the interplay between John and Ritchie was something really new in rock at that time. Also, Ian Paice is very underrated as a rock drummer, and I feel he could have held a candle to Ginger Baker and John Bonham any day of the week!
The bands vocalists have always been top notch, and the solid bass lines and witting ability of Roger Glover should never go unnoticed.
Guitarists Tommy Bolin and Steve Morse are/were brilliant choices for the band as well. Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale were perfect replacements for Gillan and Glover, and gave the band whole new sound. I really loved that phase of Deep Purple also.
They are a classic band that have undergone many changes over the years. They were there for the psychedelic rock of the 60's, the proto metal/hard rock of the early 70's, and the heavy metal of the 80's and 90's, and still going strong. I saw them two years ago, and sadly Jon Lord wasn't on stage. Tim Hinkley was at the organ in his place, and he's another great keyboard player from the 70's. Steve Morse was awesome! They are timeless...
They are my favorite band!

my woman from tokyo...and highway star

1. "Smoke On the Water". Legendary riff, as well as a great solo.

2. "Highway Star". Good riff, nice playing by Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore.

3. "Woman From Tokyo". Just recently discovered it and it has already become a favorite!

4. "Lazy". Just like it.

5. "Child in Time". Ian Gillan shines in this one.

I love Deep Purple because they have some very talented members mainly. Few people can match Ian Gillan in vocals, Ritchie Blackmore is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Ian Paice has some excellent drumming, and it's amazing to hear how well Jon Lord's organ playing fits into a hard rock/heavy metal band. Roger Glover is pretty solid, but I wouldn't call him the best or anything.

Combine and you get a great band. I'd expect some band who can't work well together, but Deep Purple was great at making songs together.

Favorite album is Machine Head, which has three of my top five favorite songs in it.

Perfect Strangers (one of the best rock songs of all time)
Hush
King of Dreams
Too Much Is Not Enough
Highway Star
