Well i do know (from one of the horses mouth) that back then they expected you to agree to make a certain amout of appearances per year and a lot of the artist were just getting started and had to commit to the shows on the road.

Is it because it requires their time to be present and participate? would be interesting to know who had been invited and turned them down.

Because you have to promise to perform at least once a year and most artists can make more on the road

"I think they just take the invites where they can make the most dollars.

I have no idea.

I think it is a big deal! Keith Whitley was going to become a Member, but died before it happened! It was something he wanted all his life, sad for him it never happened! To answer the question I have listen to the Grand Ole Opry since 1959, I was about 4 yrs old, and if it was not for the Grand Ole Opry I would not of heard the great singers of the past, and would have missed out on a lot in my life! I can't say enough good thing about the Opry and nothing bad, never!

The Mther church of country music has changed it's tune and the artist chosen today are not aware of the history of the music.
Unfortunatky the Gand Ole Opry has forgoten some of the older members. It is a sad state that the Opry does not have shows featuring the singers we listened to in the 60-80 years.
