Merle wrote many songs about coal miners and their problems. I think my favorite is Sixteen Tons which was made VERY popular by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

What most folks don't know is that Merle was a great influence on Chet Atkins with his picking style. Merle was one of the best finger pickers of his time.

Oh yes......he could do it all...write em...sing....... play guitar....inventor....I enjoyed most his guitar playing.....he was one of the first to play fingerstyle with the dropped thumb, as you probably know....my favorite has to be Cannonball Rag, the instrumental....I about went crazy when I first heard it and darn near wore out the tape........

i've got a couple of his albums, one of my favs is...
"RE-ENLISTMENT BLUES"!

I remember him, but not enough to answer, Sorry Tex!!

"So Round, So Firm, So Fully Packed" &
"Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette"

He played a mean guitar before it was "cool"

"I'll See You In My Dreams" a true oldie but I love the lyrics"
I love Merle and have a huge boxed set of his recordings.

My favorite Merle Travis song is my favorite song, period: "Dark as a Dungeon."

BTW, if you want to see some jaw-dropping AMAZING guitar playing, buy or rent the "Merle Travis at Town Hall Party" DVDs. You will not believe what that man and Joe Maphis could do with two guitars.

He was a great guitar player, and wrote songs like "9 pound hammer", Cannonball Rag,John Henry and a lot of songs like that!
