Actually, I have found that those who are not particullarly knowledgeable in classical music, tend to find Bach somewhat boring. His music is not as exciting at the surface as a composer such as Beethoven, whom many find appealing, even the novice. Regarding the ability for one to understand the nature and beauty of counterpoint, I guess I'd say that although it would be difficult to fully appreciate or understand all of its elements, I do think that one can intuitively appreciate its structure. I think that counterpoint is gravitated toward naturally, unlike more modern compositions, that are very much unnatural to the untrained air.

Sure, why not? It is only educational snobs who say that only the "educated" can appreciate beauty.

Because it appeals to many people and can be understood, on some level, by everyone.

Those who do not know anything about music can appreciate his beautiful melodies and enjoy it because it is of a tonal nature. The harmony is somewhat predictable (which the average listener likes). Many people also like his message....he wrote all of his music for God.

For those who know a lot about music...Bach is a part of their musical foundation. Bach's music exhibits the fact that tonality had become fully established. This history of our musical system is important to musicians. Also...musicians (composers esp.) admire his compositional craft and try to emulate it. His use of counterpoint borders on perfection. Also, nearly all of his pieces are viewed as being masterpieces (that's why so many of them are famous!).

Bach wrote his music in such a way that it can be changed and used in different ways, expressing different moods.I feel he wrote it all, other composers just changed the format and style.

Music can be enjoyed by everyone-I have been trained but prefer not to "study" Bach, just to enjoy it.

Music sets a mood,Bach can be very refreshing and clean and honest after a hard days work.

Even before I started studying music I liked Bach, but I do like him a hell of alot more than I ever did. There's tons of reasons pick one. Lets start with he is the greatest writer of polyphonic melodies there has ever been. Second you can't find bad music by Bach. He's written hundreds of Fugues and I've heard like seventy and not one did I not like (my favorite is Little Fugue in G minor). Although I will say his music lacks the emotion that say Stravinsky has, his melodies are really second to none, and the techniqual intensity of it rivals virtually any musician that came later (perhaps not Liszt). I describe Bach by using these words beautiful complexity.
