For that price range and sound that you are looking for, either a Fender Strat, or Telecaster. Or a Gibson Les Paul Jr. It is the guitar the Billie Joe started useing on 'Warning'.
It has a great sound, and it is relatively small and easy to play.

Check those out, but get what feels good and is easy to play for you.
Only you can buy the perfect guitar for yourself.

Picking an intermediate guitar can be a nightmare. When you're at the shop check out all of the instruments in your price range and if you're paying cash have the $$ with you and let the salesman know you will be buying that day and want to try out a number of guitars to find the one that you like the best.

Things not to worry about, string height, the strings fitted etc. you should always have the action and intonation setup to your preference when you buy a new axe.

Things to look out for: Rubber neck, where there is excessive flexure in the neck of the instruent that a truss rod adjustment won't cure.

How the guitar feels and balances when sitting and when standing.

How the guitar feels when you play it. This is far more critical than brand or model. If it feels right in your hands and it's quality and colour is what you want then it's the instrument for you. One of the most brilliant guitars I've played was a 139 buck Cimar owned by my old lead guitarist. He purchased it back in 1980 or so and added an original Floyd Rose crank and a pair of DiMarzio dual humbuckers (les paul super distortion) to it. That axe was outright wicked, with the best neck I've used on a locking trem guitar. He still gigs with it 27 years later.

try an ibanez

Best advice I can give...If it feels good in your hands after an hour or two, buy it. Even custom shop models have misses, trust me. Much overlooked is the amp. THAT is more important than the axe. Find out what your bands and guitarists were using on whatever you wish to emulate. 18 watts will kill a small room. Go for POWER tube saturation. An18 watt combo can kick a 4x12 cab and still be enjoyable at "normal" levels. Speakers are a journey that you will take. After all, you can't deafen all the dogs in the neighborhood. Just my humble opinion.

get a Schecter, they are built great and last and are perfect for that price range.

fender if you can find one that cheap

A Vendor strait! But they are pricey!

i would go with a fender stratocaster. Telecasters arent bad wither, but ive just fount strats more versitile and well they just kick ***. You probably know this, but make sure you DONT get a strat from the squier series. Squiers are wayy cheaper, true, but all they are are cheap guitars mass produced in china and Fender just slaps their name on them. I bought a Squier bass and the quality is really disappointing. So yeah, id go with a good old Fender Strat because theyre amazing. Hope i helped you! rock onn!

i have a washburn WI64 and i love it! its a great intermediate guitar. it has a good punky sound with the original pick ups. its about the same as a lespaul. if you want a tel or a strat... i personally like a tel better but what ever you do don't get a squire strat or tel. they sound HORRIBLE!! i have a squire strat also and i just gave it to my brother cause i hated it. but a regular fender would probably suffice

I prefer Gibson Les Paul Jr. like dvd10_20 said ,its the guitar the Billie Joe started using on Warning.
