avril wrote breakaway with a couple other people with the intention of recording it for her "under my skin" album. they collectively decided that it didn't fit with the rest of the album and the song was offered to kelly clarkson for her album. she connected with the song - it really fit her life at the moment she was presented with it - and the rest is history.
plus, an artist doesn't have to write everything they record, nor do they have to write exclusively for themselves. a similar thing happened with miss independent - christina aguilera wrote the song with some writers, and decided not to record it. kelly rewrote the bridge of the song, and recorded it for her thankful album.
