Does anyone know how to actually sing ska music....????!


Question: i know its a stupid question...but my friend is starting a ska band..and she knows i can sing...but i sing slow ballad love songs...and i dont know how to make the transition from love ballads to ska...so if anyone can help id greatly appreciate it...

do your research! im sure you have plenty of bands to listen to that will help you along the way...but in another light, you want to be unique. and the voice you have is just that. you don't want to try and copy exactly some other band...because that band is already famous, and you want your own future.

with slow songs and ballads, you have a more smooth tone and try to keep it even. with ska, its a lot of yelling, fast singing, and just all out attitude. if they have a problem with the way you sing, then maybe you guys aren't a good match-up.

Ska started in Jamaica around 1960.

And part of its roots comes from Motown.

So a great example of 1960's ska with a female singer would be to download "My Boy Lollipop" by Minnie Smalls.

Some great current bands would be One Night Band's cover of "Rescue Me", or go to You Tube and check out the video of "Lucky Girl" by The Pepper Pots.

I usually include a female vocalist in my podcast as well.
