In rock, pop and metal, bass guitar (or occasionally bass synth) is often considered an important link between rhythm and melody. It gives a groove to the main melody; it gives tone to the rhythm in return.

Sure, there are pop songs made without bass guitar, but if they're not slow acoustic-guitar ballads, they're going to sound rather shrill and hollow.

Now, if you have a keyboard player competent enough to keep a bassline going while playing other parts as your material requires, then you might be OK without it. If not, get a bass guitar and a GOOD bassist-- one that can hit the right notes at the right time.

the beautiful thing about music is that you are totally free to create whatever kind you want using whatever instruments you want. there are no rules. there have been plenty of bands without bass players (e.g. white stripes, yeah yeah yeahs, butthole surfers). if you think that you sound okay without bass, then don't get one. if you feel like you just don't sound right without one, get one.

umm, i dont think so, unless like a whole bunch of ur instruments are strings. im pretty sure u dont need a bass guitar

Honestly, no instrument is "needed" in a band. As long as you have a beat and a melody, you don't need anything else.

depends...if you have someone that can set themselves apart, then work it. if they are going to play the exact same notes as you, then skip it. seriously. there is no point in playing bass if you are doing the same thing the guitarist is...

Its not needed but it adds more feel to a track.

your band can definitely benefit from having a bass player because the music will feel and sound just a lot more... complete in some ways.
and a lot of people cannot stand bands without a bass, so yeah, i personally think that a bass is ideal for a band.

but if you feel like your band sounds better without a bass, or whatever, then don't add a bass, because it's really what YOU, the band, likes.

and i mean, a lot of successful bands(like the white stripes) have had no bassists either, so your band won't be like screwed or anything if you didn't have one.

so i dunno. it's all really up to you.
good luck with the band though! =]

The Doors never had a bass player. On their recordings, the bass tracks were usually played by keyboardist Ray Manzarek.

well try taking a guitar and playing everything on the 3 high strings, or a piano without the bass clef. then imagine a whole song like that. it will sound pretty thin.
