Why won't people listen to something NEW???????!

Question: Not to sound like an elitist...but why can't people listen to something other than Fur Elise, Oh Fortuna from Carmina Burana, and Moonlight Sonata? I mena it's ad nauseum people! What if people only listened to Madonna's Like A Virgin over and over and over and over and over and never picked up a new pop CD? I think pop musicians would get pretty pissed. And for the love of god if I hear Pachelbel's Canon at one more wedding, I think my ears will bleed!

But seriously...does anyone agree with me? With classical music being BY FAR the largest genre of music, how is it that the average person has only heard of 4 pieces???

The average person who's only heard of 4 classical pieces is probably out buying new pop CD's most of the time.

Real connoisseurs of classical music (which, for the sake of this discussion, includes Baroque, Romantic, and 20th Century) are going to be as well-versed in it as your average teenager is with the current rock music scene, if not much more. Furthermore, there is new music being composed every day in the "classical" vein (i.e. orchestral, chamber music, etc.) that some people are definitely into.

I agree that it would be nice to not hear #%$*# Pachelbel's Canon so much, and people might like to know that Beethoven wrote 31 piano sonatas beside Moonlight, and that there's more to Carmina Burana than O Fortuna, but when it comes to Joe Q. Public, who is much more interested in the latest pop CD, Fur Elise is about as good as it gets in the classical world. Sigh.

Who cares?

i think u had told the wrong person!!! i believe there are ppls out there who will believe in tis!! cheers

Styles come and go, if we were still in the 80's people would be talking about nothing but Def Leppard or Motley Crue...

I don't listen to anything from the 80's or 90's I like to keep up to date on music... I also listen to music nobody else really listen to, at least not on yahoo...

I currently listen to celtic/power metal songs..

Band/song

Blind Guardian - Skalds and Shadows
Luca Turilli - Ancient Forest of Elves
Elvenking - The Perpetual Knot
Edguy - Jerusalem
Kamelot - Love You To Death
Hammerfall - Dark Wings, Dark Words
Dragonland - Astronomy
Pyramaze - What Lies Beyond
Fairyland - Guardian Stones
Freedom Call - Flying High

9/10 of these bands are fairly new, most of them nobody knows about... 9/10 are from Europe..

I do agree with you and I find it extremely puzzling...not to mention annoying.
