What went wrong with Rascal Flatts and Jaime Foxx CMA performance last night?!
Question: Is it just me or did they practice at all...Gary was OFF tune and to me he didnt seem to know his own song... Jaime was all over the place and did too much ad libbing....i waited up just to see this performance and was disappointed...

When I saw that performance all I could do is laugh in astonishment. I really felt sorry for Gary. I don't think I had ever seen anyone butcher a song so badly. Initially I had thought that maybe he couldn't hear himself. I think that is the number one reason that singers go off key is they cant hear what they are singing if their ear monitor isn't working properly. That is why sometimes it appears that they are yelling when they are singing. "Like We Never Loved at All" by Tim and Faith is a great example when they sang it at the CMA's. But having said that, I always thought that he sang his songs in a really high key all the time. I know his voice suits it but I think it is way too high for him and he can't perform it live. I personally think that if someone is on tour their voice would be at its prime because they are using it so often and "breaking it in". If he cant sing two songs that is pretty bad. Anyways, my guess is that his voice had been strained because he doesn't sing properly and had to do the performance even though he most likely didn't want to. That really sucks. It is embarrassing. I have never seen him sing like he sounds on the CD. I think that Gary was looking at Jamie Fox hoping that he would sing the parts that he couldn't and it left Jamie looking like he didn't know what he was singing. Finally, remember most artist sound good in concerts. The acoustic distracts from how well they are actually singing.
I didn't think it was too bad....it was MUCH better than Rascal Flatts first performance....that one just plain sucked. He was flat and you couldn't understand a word he said. I though the duet was was 100 times as good as the first song.
Gary had something wrong w/ his voice....maybe he is getting sick....I feel bad for him, I have heard them sing at a dozen award shows and he has never sounded so bad....
Gary was having voice problems. He just couldn't reach the notes (probably getting sick). I noticed that he was cracking in the first performance but in my opinion, they should of backed out. There is probably no way he reached those notes in dress rehearsal so don't see why he thought he could reach them last night. I like both songs that they performed and am very rarely disappointed by Rascal Flatts performances but last night I was.
Too much hugging and kissing, I knew the lead singer was gay, But Jamie!!....He needs to stick to movies.
Why was Jaime Foxx even singing with them? What was with James Denton and Kate Walsh also? Sheryl Crow? These people are hardly country.
I totally agree. It was a horrible way to end the show. I'm hoping Gary's voice is just strained from being on tour. Otherwise, I don't know what to say. The song was horrible. I don't really understand why Jaime Foxx was performing with him, however, thank goodness he was. Jaime really saved the performance from being to COMPLETE embarrassment. But still Very disappointing!!!
Jamie Foxx performed performed because, as they said, he is a good friend of Gary Levox. They probably couldn't back out because of all the publicity they brought to the award ceremony. Every commercial advertised them singing with Jamie Foxx.
Also, I've seen them in concert- they put on a great concert (so don't worry). Excited to see them again this winter!
Rascal Flatts have been touring since August and Gary has to be getting sick. He did not have much of a voice left for anything, let alone to sing. You could tell he was in pain. Give 'em some slack.

Ok, I've seen Rascal Flatts several times. Rascal Flatts has been doing VERY LIGHT touring right now......and Gary ALWAYS has problems hitting notes and forgetting lyrics. I'm sooooo tired of the excuses. Every time it happens there's some excuse. Bottom line is he just can't sing. Now keep in mind I was a BIG Rascal Flatts fan, so I'm not a hater. The facts are the facts. Other singers are on all the time, or at least most of the time, Gary is OFF more than he's on. I believe the truth is he can't sing very well and the studio does wonders for him. The rest of the band constantly covers for him when they perform live. And on top of that.....it now costs at least $100 to see them live. Sorry guys, I'm done with you. I'll spend my money on Luke Bryan, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bently. they can sing and don't rape you for a live concert ticket. Oh and by the way, there is a fan club (that my GF paid for) message board for them and they routinely delete any posts that speak negatively about the performances.
I don't think it had anything to do with practicing, something was wrong with Gary's voice. Contrary to what other people have said on this board, he is awesome in person, I have been to several of their concerts and his voice is beautiful, I think he must have had a sore throat or his voice is over tired from touring. It was still great to see him and Jamie do the song live, I loved it!!! Hope you get better soon, Gary!!!
Gary has been sick. they were actually thinking about cancelling the performance but there was no way with all the hype around it.
You hit it dead on~ I feel Gary was way off. Not sure if this was a sound technical failure or what. It looked as though they never rehearsed through it. Bad performance overall.
Gary has a tendency to be off key, but I think last night was due to a cold. Jamie Foxx performed the duet that is on Rascal Flatt's latest album, probably as ABC's way of getting ratings. I am VERY disappointed that the CMA Awards have stooped to this level. Historically, the CMA Awards are VERY country and traditional (hence the reason why George Strait is in the audience every year and Toby Keith is not), while the ACM Awards are the "Hollywood" version of country. To have someone like Rascal Flatts perform TWICE while other MAJOR stars did not get to perform at all was a tragedy. I hope next year, CMA will go back to Vince Gill hosting and forget about Hollywood.
I am sure that there was something wrong with Gary's voice and Gary knew it. I feel sorry for the guy. I have heard him sing live and he sounded better than that. He must be sick.
As for Jamie, I could tell that he was having to cover up for Gary and he was probably singing some of his parts.
I was also dissapointed with George Strait and Taylor Swift. Taylor sounded nervous.
I think he was losing his voice, because he really couldn't even sing and that is why Jamie Foxx had to ad lib so much because Gary couldn't sing his part.

I vehemently concur. I to waited all night just for this performance. Someone should have handed Gary some water or something so he could've maybe, hit one of those notes. It was horrible to watch and I hate saying that because they are my favorite group. Everyone has an off day, and unfortunately live at the CMA's was theres.
Rascal Flatts is my favorite band. I feel awful for them, however if he was having voice issues they should have backed out.

His voice was horrible!! I love rascall flatts, I wish they would have said that he was having voice problems and he would do his best or not performed at all!! Very disappointing!!
People c'mon...it is the start of cold and flu season. Give the man a break. Jamie foxx and gary were roomates in college and like to sing together. They explained that in the intro. Furthermore, in a production of this scale if you are "off" in a rehersal you cannot just "backout" as you suggested. You'd use a backing track. What's worse...lip syncing or a few cracks in the performance? Besides the sound in a large venue like that does not transfer all that great to tv anyway. No big whoop.
I agree. I know Rascal Flatts is better than that. I think Gary was really struggling with a cold. On the CD, he and Jamie sound great duet-ing. He was also constantly messing with his belt-pack for his in-ear monitors too. I think the show in general was very disappointing. Lots of dead time and even Keith Urban sounded flat. Hmmm... let's get 'em next time.
i felt so sorry for Gary. Rascal Flatts is my all time favorite band, I don't feel like anyone should be disappointed with him, he can't help it. I don't think they could've backed out even if they wanted to, because they we're probally the main performance, because they were the first and last to sing. So too many people were looking forward to seeing them, and then it would've been an even bigger disappointment if they canceled. I did't care for Jamie Foxx, he is too into himself, and I think Rascal Flatts could have found someone better to sing with them. I thought it was a good performance, Gary tried really hard to get it right.
O, and ya, Gary had something wrong with his voice. I am pretty sure he is sick.
