I suggest not listening to those 2 and go ahead and send the demos, but know what you are getting into. You should also send a bio and an 8x10 picture in a little folder so they can see everything about your band.
Also know who you are sending it to. Try to send it to a specific person at the label if you can. Do some research into the label and find out who that is. Also definately look into Indie labels. There are tons of good ones that will be easier to get in touch with and more likely to listen to your cd. Do research on those too and find out what types of bands they sign etc.
Try to make it interesting, something that will stand out when they open the envelope so they will be like we have to hear this.
They will not answer unless they want to see you/meet with you or hear more. Don't be discouraged. It could take a long time for them to get to you. You could always call them and talk to them about sending a demo before you do, maybe you will get some tips or make an impression. You could also call a few weeks after you send it too.
If you really want to get signed you can't give up. EVER.

Tips?

Avoid the major labels.

I am dead serious.

Anyway, it's more than likely that anything you send will end up in the "circular file":

My tip to you is to send nothing at all. No one at a record label is going to touch an unsolicited demo. In fact, I'm not sure if there's ever been a band that got signed by sending a demo to a label. There are 2 general ways a band gets signed. The first one being that they are noticed by a talent scout while performing live, this is how most groups in the 60's, 70's, and 80's got signed. Now, you usually have to get a large fanbase in your hometown and surrounding areas, and then get signed by a local or independent label. If that turns out to be successful, then it's possible a bigger label will approach you. Otherwise, record label guys won't touch anything you give them.
