Chris Cornell has stated that the lyrics have no meaning ("Someone said something in the studio, and I heard this..."), and he thought the lyrics "sounded cool".
I think atominc has this right... it seems like just a bunch of gibberish about heat, cold, damp, wind, and a black-hole sun. Great song, though! God bless Soundgarden. I always miss the good old days when I hear Chris Cornell now.
