John Petrucci. Sure you have all these influential guitarists from the past (Jimi Hendrix, Price, Led Zeppelin, etc.). But as for today, John Petrucci (best known as a founding member of the progressive metal band "Dream Theater") has shown stupendous solo abilities that would even make Slash cry.
oh god sooo many but i have to narrow it down to Randy Rhodes because you look at all the work he had did and all the amazing solos he put together in that short time he was in fame and you stop and think, if this guy was alive he could have gotten better (which seems insane to think so) and he would have been even greater than he was.

As for living guitarists, I'd place Tommy Emmanuel at the top of the list. Check out the many videos on You Tube and other places. He is currently touring. Go see him if you can. One guy and one acoustic guitar. You will be amazed!
