same music and a lot of the words are the same.
"Who Shot Sam" was the follow-up to "White Lightnin'" (which was written by J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson). As you say, musically it's pretty much a note-for-note copy of "White Lightnin'," and in fact it even references the song in the lyrics: "drinkin' white lightnin' started all the fightin'."
That was 1959, the same year the Big Bopper died.
