The difference is mostly the seasoning and style..not to mention that when you say southern home cooking it usually means beans and rice, potatoes and gravy, and barbecued anything...when you say soul food I think chicken, chitlens and ribs.....

I don't think there is any difference in the type of foods that are cooked, but there may be a slight difference in the cooking methods and/or seasonings.
I cook greens, sweet potato pie, peas, cornbread(with no sugar), butter beans, butter peas, green beans, fried okra, fried yellow squash, peach cobbler, meatloaf, used to make fried chicken, but grill it now, creamy potato salad, fried corn...does any of this sound familiar?? I just call it cooking. lol.

Don't think there is a difference

There is really NO difference that I can tell. They are the same, most use grease and fry.......xx

The difference Is how you season it,personal preference.

Yeah, the seasoning is a lot of it, also soul food tends to be more fried & richer in fats. I have a recipe for dressing to go with chicken, uses a full cup of butter & some bacon grease to saute the onions & bell pepper, then buttermilk with the cornmeal. Yummmmy! But eat too much & you're in the outhouse all night. Oh yeah, a main ingrediant is listening to the right music while ya cook & a kitchen full of dancin' women!

Soul food: Gumbo, grits black eyed peas, chitlins.
Southern food : Texas hash, dump cake.

The difference is not so much the dishes or the way they are seasoned. Soul Food is the ability to take a little bit of nothin' add summa this and summa what your neighbor gave you and summa what you got out of the garden. Then you put it all together, add some cornbread and a big old table. Invite all your friends and whoever else that is hungry, ask GOD'S blessing and THAT is SoulFood!!
