They're both prog bands with lead singers with high pitched whiny voices, not necessarily a bad thing. Your dad is right, they have a lot in common. C&C have been called the modern version of Rush.
umm . . . yea, they do sound quite similar. both lead singers sound very similar, and they both have those awesome guitar riffs and stuff going on.
