Who was the better piano play: Liszt or Rachmaninoff?!

Question: i would say Liszt because he seemed to have left more audience in awe; however, by the time Rachmaninoff came, piano technique had developed so much that people might not have complimented as much because there were a lot of pianists with brilliant, formidable techniques.

Liszt!

Liszt, hands down (forgive the pun). Rachmaninoff was the better composer, but Liszt with his octave and half finger expansion was the better player.

We don't know as there are no recordings of Liszt to enable us to compare him with Rachmaninov. We have only written testimony from those who heard him - and, of course, his music.

Iiszt but Rachmaninoff had bigger hands

By reputation Liszt, but being as there is no way to verify this the question is pretty much moot. There are recording of Rachmaninov, but obviously nothing but anecdotes about Liszt. I am not sure by what standards one would make a judgement, perhaps on comments about how a performer plays music other than his own. Chopin is reputed to have said that Liszt played his music better than he could himself.
