gibson guitars are all a little different each model of sg is a little different. the 61 reissue has a wide neck though not as thick neck try all the different models. my favorite is the sg special, for it's easy playability. the les paul has narrow necks and some of the fretboards are more flat than others. the ephiphones are cheaper in price but the quality is not comparable on a other side the esp viper is a good guitar the is very much comparable in quality with the gibson sg. and a better value for the price. the sg a lighter in weight and therefore better for on stage. I play lots of black sabbath on my esp viper 400 with a marshall 1/2 stack and it definitly rocks. sound as good or better that my gibson sg. just try a few stores and play lots of different models

I like the SG standard personally.

Go with an SG. Gibsons are not quite crass enough to play the stuff you want to play. Also invest in a quality amp that will really show how good those songs can sound.

The SG has more frets clear of the body (22 frets clear of the body!), so it is suppoesdly easier to play leads way up high past the 15th fret.

The SG is lighter, and a bit more contoured than the Les Paul, so it may be less stressful to play for long periods.

However, the Les Paul is a classic design with great sustain and playability.

Regarding the tone, both are similar, so your amp and signal chain probably has more to do with your guitar tone than choosing between these 2 guitars!

I have played both Gibsons and both Epi's.

Currently I have an Epi. Les Paul and SG.

Both are fantastic guitars if you can't afford the Gibsons. Both are very good to play and sound very close to Gibsons. It really depends on what feels good to you.

Go to a music store and play both SG and LP. try and decide which feels, plays and sounds better, you can't go wrong with either.

I think at this point it's personal preference on looks, sound and feel.

Good luck.

I would have to go with a les paul on this one. I've played both at my uncle's, and although i love both guitars, the les paul pulls ahead just a little in my books. But it's deffinetly a lot more to do with the style that you prefer when you put these two head to head
