CLassic Country Music Fans, can you PALEEEEEZE help settle an argument between m!

Question: ok, i'm the only female in the band, i sing lead vocals, play keyboards and lead guitar(sometimes when randy is not so uptight)..ok the argument is, i'd like to sing more "men" songs...i/we already do a few and the guys think that i should either change the words to fit a woman or don't sing it at all!!

ok, i don't agree because songs like "HELLO DARLIN"-
"I'LL LEAVE THIS WORLD LOVIN YOU"-"I SANG DIXIE"etc..don't even require words to be changed, so there are a million that we can start doing, i'm tired of the same old songs..what do you think about a WOMAN singing a MAN'S song?...OH AND I DON'T MIND IF YOU DON'T AGREE WITH ME, I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK..THANKS!

I don't think it matter's the artist's gender.. as long as the words can be either and it doesn't say something about "my girlfriend" or "my wife" or something sing whatevery you want!

There's nothing wrong with that. Even if you have to change a couple of words to make it more "female-appropriate", i.e. saying "she" instead of "he", not a problem. And the crowds would love it. Keep on making music, that's the important thing.

i think you should sing what you can sing well, and don't worry about if it is a "man" song or not. i really like the song, i'm just a female female etc. and when i sing it i get some funny looks as i am a man. but so what? i like the song so i sing it.

Well some wouldn't hurt! But I agree with the guys to much crossing of the gender line doesn't look good and may not be the best thing for your career in the long run!

I don't think it matters if a woman sings a "man" song. There have been lots of songs that were originally sung by men and redone by women and vice versa. Sing what you like. I always do. I also don't find it necessary to change the words.

If the words don't need changin', then don't change 'em. However, there are some songs that would sound strange coming from a female vocalist just as there are some that would sound weird coming from a male vocalist unless the words were changed to create a better fit...

As long as it's not talking about "my girlfriend" or "my wife" it should be fine. I wouldn't advise singing something like "Linda On My Mind" though.

In hopefully settling your argument, I'd like to point out that there is a long history of "gender-switching" songs in country music. For instance, "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight" has been sung by both male and female (check out the Louvin Brothers' version for an astonishing rendition) without changing the line, "And when the room he entered, the bride upon his arm." I know there are Carter Family songs that do this; in fact, I'm pretty sure that Sara sings lead on "Worried Man Blues." IN other genres, John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery" begins, "I am an old woman," and Andy Pratt's "Avenging Annie" was written as a woman narrative ("they call ME avenging Annie, the avenger of womanhood").

I don't see a problem, especially since it isn't new.

I think it may depend upon the song but one thing is for sure. If you are singing a song as a tribute to an artist, it should be sung as it was written for the artist. When a song is well known, people are not going to care, they just want to reminisce with a well loved song and relive memories and that is what it is all about anyhow.

in this politically correct world does it really matter? Maybe twenty years ago yes, today no.

Personally, it doesn't bother me at all. A few songs would probably have to be sung as a man's song or a woman's song--think of "The Wild Side Of Life," by Hank Thompson and the answer by Kitty Wells "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels." But I think for most songs it wouldn't matter a bit if a woman sings a "man's" song.

go ahead and sing them.. they may be your one big break.
there is really no such thing as a man's song or a woman's song.... they express the same things, no matter who's point of view it is..
so as some one has said above, just change the he to a she or vice versa..
good luck with your music!!

Sounds good to me.It don't matter who sings male or female, just that it is good country. You can't change that whoever sangs.

Okie, I'll just say one thing...Follow your heart:) We are only here for a little while and time is too short to worry about what everyone else thinks. You get out their and sing till your hearts content:)

Sing what you want to...that's why it's called America!!

Shouldn't make a difference at all, belt it out proud! Never figured out why all the guys sang about how mean women were to them, like southern boys just don't get treated right. I'd love to hear a woman sing some of the 'she done me wrong & I'm just good ol' boy' songs. If it suits your voice & your state of mind, cool.
