Question: Ok people tell me I can sing but when I record myself singing I sound horrible

Get an opinion from a paid professional. That way, you don't have to worry about your friends simply humoring you. If the paid teacher says you have potential, odds are, you do.
If recoding on a dry mike without any delay, then even the greatest singers in the world can sound bad. Take it from people that you can sing, and then go and do what you want to do. recording studio / join a band / musical theatre - go for it.
My brother is the same, even over the phone he sounds like captain squeaky! Get yourself some singing lessons - even professionals have them, it'll teach you how to breathe properly and not to strain your vocal chords
