You can go to Hot Topic or just about any tattoo shop to buy the actual gages and they should have ones that start small and get bigger (conelike)
A standard piercing is a size 18, and as the gage gets bigger the # gets smaller
A good rate to expand is typically is one size every 2 weeks
And make sure to keep it really clean

Gauges are cheap at all tattoo places, but there's always places like Hot Topic where they have them on sales and such.
My friends and I share each others gauges, so maybe that's an idea for you, because they're around $10-$18 bucks for me in St.Louis.

Anyways, to answer your question you should get a professional to give you info about gauging your ears. I think that a good size for you would be around maybe a 4 or 6 because they're not as big as golf balls.=]]
I've seen them at tattoo and piercing places and also at stores like Hot Topic, though I would go to a professional first and after you are more comfortable with the stretching business then get them regularly.
