Without equivocation, the best period, for music, was the 60's.
The reason why is because art imitates life, and during the period of the 60's people, in this country and people, around the world, were fighting for freedom, justice and equality.
These struggles, and the ups and downs that came with them, were reflected in the music and lyrics produced by the artists that sprang, from that environment.
The music of the 60's had lyrics that were poignant, uplifting, socially/politically astute and informative and celebratory of life's triumphs.
The majority of music, since the 60's has appeared drug induced and for entertainment ONLY.

For me it's the 70's.
Although im 23 i would have 2 say that 60-90s music was the best kinda music cos u can actually understand wot they're singing!

For me, music hit it's peak between 1966 and 1976, anything before that period sounds a bit dodgy, and most stuff afterwards was either way too far up it's own *ss, or totally talentless noise!
I think that most of the answers will reflect the decade in which each passed through their teens. Unless you're a little left of center (not a bad thing), your favorite is generally the music you grew up listening to.
Mine? 1964 - 1974; I know, that spans two separate decades, but that's where most of my favorite music lives.

definately the 70's when reggae was called reggy and you could understand what the story behind the song was all about
