It is strictly their choice whether to accept the invitation or not. Many of them have stated that the commitment can have a financial effect on them due to having to be on the show a guaranteed number of times per year. They can make more being on the road in concert rather than being on the opry. It really used to have a lot of prestige to be a member but I don't think it means what it used to. The opry has relaxed their appearance requirements somewhat in the past few years.

Yeah the guy above me is right its their choice

It is their choice, and they could make more money by not being a member of the Opry. However, if you look at the careers of those who were members of the Opry they were generally more successful in the long run, because they were always in the spotlight.

Yes, it's their choice, but not many legends left...The Opry should change it's name to Pseudo-Country Club!!!!

The only Legend that isn't a member of the Opry that I was aware of was Hank Sr, who was fired from the Opry. I'd guess any others weren't a member by choice. I can't imagine any true legends that didn't have the invitation extended to them.

I can think of three reasons. First, there is a requirement for performing a certain number of shows (although you wouldn't know it after seeing all the people who are considered members of the Opry while being M.I.A. for YEARS). It is not as tight as it once was (in the 50s and 60s, the requirement was 26 weekends a year, and superstars such as Don Gibson, Kitty Wells, and Faron Young were fired over not making their commitment); however, it is still "technically" a requirement of membership. It is my understanding that George Strait has turned down membership to the Opry simply because, living in Texas and operating a ranch, he felt he would not be able to maintain membership requirements. (I wish a lot of members felt that strongly about the Opry!!)

Secondly, an invitation MUST come from the Opry, and for that to happen, they have to like the artist. (Jim Denny, one-time manager of the Opry, told a young, up-and-coming artist that he'd never amount to anything and to quit music and go back to driving trucks. The young artist Denny criticized after an Opry performance was Elvis Presley, and as a result the Opry missed having him as a member.) I, unfortunately, know a number of artists who aren't on the "good side" of Opry management, shall we say (to be polite), and subsequently, despite success and a desire to become an Opry member, were never invited to join.

The final reason, sad to say, would be Nashville snobbery. There is an unspoken disdain in Nashville circles for those who are not headquartered in Nashville. This is why it took California-based people like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard so long to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame; and it is why people like Wynn Stewart and Rose Maddox will never be recognized for their important contributions to country music. Dwight Yoakam could be the best thing that ever happened to the Opry; however, he's based in Bakersfield (due to his love for Owens, no doubt), so I don't see him receiving an invitation to join the Opry.

not to mention the opry is a bunch of pricks. Hank Sr. was fired for his drinking, and drug abuse. He was fired with the intent that he would clean up and return. Of course he never had a chance to clean up, and they will not reinstate him in the opry. Imagine that, the man who made the Opry, not allowed membership status again. The pricks have a Hank Sr Impersonator greet you at the door for goodness sake. Thats why I ask people to go sign the petition and get the man back in. Not for the bullcrap they do today, but for the opry of yesteryear he helped build.
