Hi,

This is an interesting sounding excercise. I once read an interview with Paul Simon. He said that when he is staring at a blank piece of paper, and is at a loss for the very first line to write, he remembers that someone told him to simply write something that is undeniably true... it can never sound wrong simply because it's true. Then, work with that line to weave interesting textures from more words and phrases. I think that was the inspiration for one of his songs that starts: "They've got a great wall in China..." He swears that he wrote that line simply because it was true... then other ideas started to come.

So, why not start out wrting obvious truths? Then.. build from there... maybe something like:

I need to write a simple rhyme
I don't know what to say
Got a feelin' down inside of me
So I'll just start writin' anyway.....

Sounds silly. But I just did an album with my band, and the record company gave us 3 weeks to finish it. What they didn't know is that we had not ONE song written (they would have killed us if they knew!) So, with only 3 days to write before the recording began, I think I must have started 90% of my song ideas with simple truths.... and I wound up having 3 songs on the album that I wrote 100% of the lyrics to.

Of course, you need to use whatever techniques feel natural and comfortable to you, but in the meantime, maybe my suggestion sparks some creativity... Good Luck!

Try starting out with something connected to you that was sad or something that you have a strong opinion about and go from there. Just write a paragraph and then shorten it up and mess around with the wording. It always helps me with my classes when writing poetry or writing lyrics for my dad's band.

begin by saying , “I’ve got five golden days of sunshine. A cool breeze to help me on my way. I am leaving here knowing .. there is nothin left to say.” Now you’re stuck. right? So call out0 ,”Say, hey”, and tell the world something you thought just has to be said. then say, “I’ve got five golden days of sunshine a cool breeze to help me on my way. I am leavin hear satisfied there is nothin left to say. Now you’re stuck again. So call out, “Say, hey” and continue the ‘say, hey’ song until you have said all there is to say. When you are through send it to me. I’ll add it to my collection.

just start by writing about what you are feeling and when you've done that the try to make it rhyme
